Convection Cookers

Convection Cooker Reviews

We are all looking for ways to reduce our energy usage while still trying to prepare delicious food within a limited time frame, all a result of the times in which we live. Electricity utilities are looking to reduce consumption during the peak hours in the evening when we are busy preparing our evening meals.

So how do we reduce our energy consumption yet still produce perfectly cooked delicious food? The options in the past have been limited to microwave cooking with often less than desirable results in taste and appearance. There has always been gas but this is not available or even desirable for all with many settling for foregoing delicious oven cooked food altogether or even worst, settling for take away.

So how do we save energy and time yet still produce perfectly cooked food in our own kitchens?

The answer is by using convection cooking with convection ovens or hot air cookers or air fryers.

What is convection cooking? Convection cooking uses the circulation of hot air to more efficiently cook at a lower temperature and in reduced time. To understand how circulating hot air is more efficient that radiant heat as found in conventional cookers, think of the effect of wind chill on a cold day and how the moving air can quickly reduce the temperature way beyond ambient.  The same occurs when hot air moves past an object causing the heat to be absorbed much more quickly than if the air was still.

Other benefits inlude a constant temperature throughout the oven / cooker from the top shelf to the bottom, even and perfect browning while maintaining moisture, and even baking of breads, cakes, and pastries. Convection cooking produces better tasting vegetables as the sugars begin caramelizing sooner with crisp edges and beatiful moist rich flavors.

Estimates in savings using a convection cooker are 25% less time and 25 degrees lower than stated in most recipes designed for standard cookers. Include the benefit of being able to use all the shelves i.e. you can cook more items in your convection cooker / oven at the same time and you start to accumulate real savings!

Convection cooking is not only found in ovens (fan forced ovens being the most familiar) with benchtop ovens and air cookers / air fryers being commonly available. We review three convection cookers representing what we
believe are the best of the best in their category.

Firstly, we review the Secura Halogen Infrared Turbo Convection Countertop Oven, representing the small and portable end of the market. This oven is ideal for small appartments or for preparing smaller meals where a full oven would be wasteful.

Small Convection Cooker

Secura Halogen Infrared Turbo Convection Oven

The Secura Covection Oven pre-heats very quickly saving energy over a standard oven.

The cooker is self cleaning but is dishwasher safe if required.

The cooker can defrost, broil, roast, bake, grill, barbecue, fry and steam replacing many appliances with just one.

No need to add oil or fat as the convection cooker uses the natural juices to produce healthy meals.

Cons: This oven will still require you to have some cooking ability i.e. it is not set and forget. You will have to turn roasts to ensure even browning or at very least monitor as it cooks. We suggest you purchase an additional cook book as the one that comes with the unit is insufficient to use the oven at its best.

The second convection cooker we review is the Breville BOV800XL The Smart Oven 1800-Watt Convection Toaster Oven representing the benchtop midrange oven market. This oven would suit a small apartment or someone who doesn’t require a full size oven for the majority of their cooking. The energy savings alone against most full size convection ovens is 50% and well worth considering.

Medium Convection Cooker

Breville BOV800XL The Smart Oven

The Breville Smart Oven is attractively constructed from reinforced stainless steel with easy to use controls and a blue backlit LCD display providing information at a glance. One of my favorite features is the ejection of the wire rack for easy removal of hot items.

Other great features include fast heatup, energy efficient operation, an embossed and ribbed top surface that can be used as a warming tray, and a front access crumb tray for easy cleanup.

The oven provides nine pre-set functions that are customizable: Toast, Bagel, Bake, Roast, Broil, Pizza, Cookies, Reheat, or Warm. Temperature and time are preset for each function making this oven / toaster a dream to use. My favorite is the Pizza function which lets you set the diameter of the pizza and whether it is frozen or fresh.

This is a powerful oven so must be plugged into a 20A socket. I would not recommend a power board or extension cord due to the high power of this device.

Cons: This is more than a toaster oven and cannot be mounted underneath the counter like other toaster ovens. This oven requires counter space and at least 4 inches clearance due to its higher capacity. An interior light would be useful.

The third convection cooker we reviewed was a full sized convection oven with induction cook top – the GE Profile : PHB925SPSS 30 Freestanding Induction Range, 5 Cooking Zones, Convection, and Self Cleaning functionality.

Large Convection and Induction Cooker

GE Profile : PHB925SPSS 30 Freestanding Induction Range

The convection oven in the GE Profile Freestanding Induction Range is large in comparison to the Breville and has a third element around the fan for additional even temperature control. The oven has all the benefits of convection cooking as well as being self cleaning. We have not found a single feature we would change with the oven – it is really that good!

The cook top is an induction style cooker which means that the surface does not become hot. The system works by inducing heat in the cookware and has remarkable heat control in comparison to electric or gas. Boiling water is incredibly fast – the old adage about watching water boil does not apply here!

Because the top doesn’t heat up there are no problems with spills burning onto the surface. Just wipe with a paper towell when you are done and it will be pristine again. To prevent scratching the stove top when using old cookware, lay a piece of paper towell beneath the base of the cookware and the stove top and use it afterwards to wipe up. It will not burn as the heat is induced into the cookware – not on the stove top.

Temperature control is instantaneous and very fine. A boiling pot will instantly cease boiling when turned down to simmer and melting chocolate can be performed very slowly without danger of burning.

All up this is the best cooking appliance we have trialled through the combination of induction top and convection oven.

Cons: these are not cheap but are worth every penny. Being an upright range the controls are placed behind the cooking surface (as is usual with this style of range) and this can make operation tricky when there are a number of pots on the boil. Nothing new here as I’m sure we have all experienced this problem in the past. At least you wont burn yourself on the cooktop!

Kitchenaid 600 Series Stand Mixer in Empire Red

Recently, I purchased a kitchenaid 600 series stand mixer to go with my newly renovated kitchen. I chose a Kitchenaid stand mixer as nothing says quality like Kitchenaid and they are now also very affordable.  More on that soon. This is a serious piece of professional equipment and subsequently can be found in many professional food establishments.

The first thing I noticed when the box arrived was the weight.  This thing was heavy! Fortunately I purchased from an online retailer who provided free shipping.

The weight is a sure sign of quality and is due to a full metal gearbox and casing and a 575 watt seriously powerful electric motor. There is no way you will suffer from an out of control mixer skating across your kitchen bench with the Kitchenaid pro. It comes with a 6 quart stainless steel mixing bowl with capacity enough to knead 2 loaves of bread concurrently.

My Kitchenaid 600 series stand mixer came in Empire Red to match my kitchen and the paint finish was professional and very high quality.  The mixer comes in a range of colors but choose carefully as the price changes dramatically with the color choice. My kitchenaid 600 pro takes prominent place in my kitchen and never fails to impress dinner guests.  One review commented on the size and the subsequent inability to find suitable storage space but this was not a problem in my kitchen.

The performance of the mixer is outstanding with 10 speeds for a full range of mixing tasks and a soft start feature to minimise ingredient splatter and flour puff.  The 575 watt motor with direct drive steel gearbox will mix up to 14 cups of all purpose flour (less for high gluten or multi-grain) and produce up to 8 pounds of mashed potatoes.  The included PowerKnead spiral hook kneads double batches of bread dough easily reducing preparation time and there is also an overload protection feature to prevent overheating. The recipe book that comes with the mixer contains many great recipes and also provides advice on  the mixing differences betweeen professional and standard mixers to help you adjust when using your family recipes.

The kitchenaid 600 series stand mixer has a professional bowl lift to raise the bowl into the mixing position.  Other included accessories are a professional wire whip, a burnished flat beater, a spiral dough hook, and a one piece pouring shield.  It also comes with a multipurpose attachment hub for additional attachments such as an ice cream maker, food processor, juicer, grinder and slicer, and many more.

One review mentioned that the supplied attachments aren’t dishwasher safe and need to be washed by hand as the harsh chemicals in your diswasher will tarnish the metal on the attachements.

These mixers are very well priced online at Amazon but please do your own research before you buy. I was unable find a better price at a traditional store or other online retailer than Amazon and currently you can save up to $181 (depending on the color) off the list price and also receive a post purchase rebate of $40 plus FREE shipping to US addresses.

The kitchenaid 600 series stand mixer is an affordable alternative to the standard domestic mixer with professional features and performance to justify the price.

Delta Touch2o Faucet

Delta Touch2o Faucet

Delta Touch2o Faucet

For those of you that are interested in high tech kitchen accessories than the Delta Touch2o Faucet is one that you will want to check out.

Stunning!   Can you use that word to describe a faucet? Elegant and sleek, this faucet stands out. This particular faucet was part of the Pilar series with a single pull down handle and soap dispenser.

This faucets definitely stands out at almost 14″ high, and will most likely need to sit above a larger than normal size sink to avoid splashing.

The pull-down wand has a toggle push button which allows you to choose between the spray and stream modes. The wand also has a giant 360 degree swivel range to reach every part of your sink. The head of the wand is equipped with Touch-Clean, these are soft rubber nubbins that allow you to easily clean away lime build-up and calcium with the touch of a finger.

While not in use, magnatite, an integrated magnet will keep your wand securely docked. This also ensures that over time, the pull down wand will not droop.

The stand out feature of this faucet is the Touch2o technology. The handiest of features you won’t know how you did without it. Simply turn the water on or off with just a touch of the faucet or handle. Whatever is free and clean can be used, a wrist, elbow or finger will turn the water on or off. Think of all the times your hands have been covered with raw meat, cake batter or eggs – no need to transfer all that muck to the handle or the faucet – just a little tap with your forearm or elbow and the water is flowing.

Save money and conserve water buy easily and quickly turning the flow from on to off while washing up. A single handle controls water flow rate and water temperature.

Free up more counter space with the soap/lotion dispenser which loads easily from the top.

If you’ve never installed a plain old fashion faucet before than my advice would be, don’t make this faucet your first. For those handy men or women however, you should have your faucet in, up and running within 2 hours.

Delta touch faucets come in a number of ranges and finishes. More information on the delta touch faucet -can be found at Delta Touch2o Review now.

Frontline Plus Best Prices

Flea and tick protection for your dog can be expensive, especially when your searching for the best product available.

I didn’t start out using frontline plus for my dog but after trialling some of the other treatments, including, shampoos, sprays, medicated collars, and other types of control drops, I soon realised that Frontline was definitely the best.

Why?

Well apart from being effective it doesn’t seem to have had any ill side effects on my pet.  It’s also approved for use on kittens and puppies from 8 weeks of age and on breeding, pregnant or lactating pets.

It lasts for an entire month and is very easy to apply by snapping the top off the applicator and applying the entire contents to a single spot directly onto the skin between your pet’s shoulder blades.

Graco Snugride Travel System Review

For some, infant car seat shopping can be a little overwhelming, especially when you consider how important a product like a car seat actually is.

There are so many makes and models on the market, all seem to look, feel and do different things, not to mention suit different budgets.  I put a lot of time and energy into researching just the right seat for myself so figured I’d share my findings with you.
